CoolSculpting vs. Liposuction: Discover Which Treatment is Right for You

For many people, diet and exercise are not enough to give them the bodies they desire. Despite all their efforts, they still have stubborn pockets of fat that refuse to go away. The providers at PureMD MedSpa Dayton, Liberty Township, and Dayton, Ohio, understand the frustration this can cause and we’re here to help.

We offer both liposuction and CoolSculpting® to help you cross the finish line. Which procedure is right for you depends on your health, aesthetic goals and expectations.

What is liposuction?

According to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, liposuction was the second-most popular cosmetic surgery performed in 2016, with more than 235,000 procedures in the United States alone.

First performed in 1974, liposuction ― also referred to as lipoplasty ― is a surgical procedure that removes excess subcutaneous fat, the results of which can improve the body’s contour. Depending on the size and location of the treatment area, it may be performed under general anesthesia, a local anesthetic, or IV sedation.

During liposuction, the surgeon makes one or more small incisions in the targeted area. They then insert a cannula, which is a long, narrow suction tool, to suck out the fat. Liposuction is effective for treating a wide range of places in the body. It’s also effective in treating large areas. The most popular areas for Liposuction at the PureMD MedSpa practices are: abdomen, flanks, bra fat, arms, chin, inner thighs, outer tights, knees.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a newer procedure, coming to market in 2005. Also referred to as cryolipolysis, the procedure is a nonsurgical, noninvasive method of removing fat cells from small, targeted areas. CoolSculpting works by freezing your fat cells to the point that they crystallize and then die. In the following weeks and months, your body eliminates the dead fat cells naturally, giving your body a smoother, more sculpted look.

CoolSculpting can treat your thighs, abdomen, sides, and area under your chin.

Which treatment is right for me?

The ultimate decision of which treatment you should choose will depend on your discussion with one of our physicians. They’ll take into account not only your medical history, but also your treatment goals and whether or not you should have an invasive procedure.

CoolSculpting is great for treating stubborn pockets of fat in small areas. It’s also ideal for patients who are looking for a nonsurgical approach to body contouring. However, you may need multiple sessions to achieve your aesthetic goals. Furthermore, your results will not be immediately apparent, as it can take up to three months for your body to eliminate the dead fat cells.

Liposuction is a more aggressive and invasive procedure. However, it can treat large areas of the body and remove more fat in a single session. Furthermore, you’ll see your results within days, final results of the body reshaping being after 3-6 months though.

In addition, liposuction can be performed together with other procedures, such as autologous fat transfer, where the fat extracted during liposuction is injected into other areas of the body where more volume is desired or body or face tightening that will give you a more youthful profile.

It’s important to note that neither procedure is intended as a weight loss program. Instead, they’re intended to treat stubborn pockets of fat, preferably when you’re close to your weight loss goal.
